ECO BONZAAAA
WOW, what a journey already.
This blank had been shaped around the same time as the Walmart board. I wanted to shape it while I was fresh from the last one. they both ended up very flat! but the bonza again turned out sooooooo much better. The build quality stepped up again with the resin work going to plan. I learned that if you stay around the board during the hardening of the resin you can keep making small corrections. The laminating process all comes down to preparation. if you are ready with everything you need then it should go to plan.
I always got excited about shaping the tail, I think that the tail is quite important on a surfboard as your weight is more situated to the rear. so when deciding I just wanted to do the opposite to the Walmart board. A diamond tail allows the board to sink easier onto an edge to engage the rail. with this board being 2.5 inches thick (where most of the volume comes from the belly = fat rails) the tail allows me to turn this board on a dime while still keeping that fat belly for volume.
The ART
The artwork on this board makes it my favorite for sure! I spent some time looking for ideas on what I wanted to do and came across a young lad on youtube who was taping off squares on a piece of paper and putting different acrylic paints down and then just simply dragging a spatula across the box leaving a pulled paint look. when I saw that video it was as if sparks went off in my head. that's what ill do! it was soo much fun to create as every time I added a color it changed the look dramatically.
Fin's
I knew I wanted to try to make a single fin and I was gearing up to gather the leftover fiberglass into 60+ layers of fibers to create a blank, but my time came to an end at this point as I was nearing the end of my stay in Canada because my already extended holiday visa had run out. I ended up buying a single fin on Vancouver island just before I took this board for some well-needed one on one in Tofino.
